The foundation was started in 1993 by DR and Isla Miller to help preserve the endangered Asian elephant.

The Miller family’s elephant herd is one of the largest in the United States. In fact, only second to Ringling Bros. In Florida.

Currently, The Endangered Ark Foundation cares for twenty-eight elephants.

Twenty-five females and three males

At this time, in addition to the Asian Elephants, the foundation cares for one African Elephant.

 

Some Quick Facts About the Asian Elephant

Scientific name is, Elephas Maximus.

Smaller than African elephants, Asian elephants are still an impressive…"up to 21 feet long, 10 feet tall and can weigh up to 11,000 pounds"!

They have five toenails of their front feet and have four toenails on their back feet.

They have one finger on the tip of their trunk.

Males may have large ivory tusks and females may only have a small tusk or in fact…none at all.

 

Some Quick Facts About the African Elephant

Scientific name is Loxodonta Africa

The African elephant is the world’s largest living, land mammal!

Male, African elephants, of the savanna species, grow up to 25 feet long and stand of to 11 feet tall…and can weigh up to 14,000 pounds.

African elephants have two fingers on the tip of their trunks.

They have four toenails on their front feet and three toenails on their back feet.

Their ears are…three times the size of Asian elephant ears.

And…both females and males have large, ivory tusks.

Each elephant can eat…2 bales of hay…16 pounds of grain…a variety of fruits and vegatables, and drink between 50 to 75 gallons of water…EACH DAY!
